Man arrested in airport departures on suspicion of burglary after diamond jewellery taken

Sunday 27 October 2024

A man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of burglary as he attempted to board a flight to Gatwick.

Only hours earlier expensive diamond jewellery had been taken from a store in Town.

The jewellery was recovered from baggage on the plane, Bailiwick Law Enforcement say.

The suspected burglary happened at around 11:20, with a man fleeing the jewellery shop.

It triggered a fast-track investigation by police.

Just under two hours later, a man was arrested on suspicion of burglary within the Departure Lounge of Guernsey Airport as he attempted to board the 13:00 Aurigny flight to Gatwick.

"Police officers went aboard the aircraft following the arrest to ensure that no other passengers were linked to groups seen near to the location of the offence and to recover baggage, which was already on the flight, belonging to the arrested man," Guernsey Law Enforcement said in a social media post.

"The stolen items were recovered from within the baggage which was on the aircraft.

"Our investigation and subsequent search caused the plane to be slightly delayed, departing 20 minutes after its scheduled time.

"We would like to thank passengers, airport staff and operators for their assistance in recovering these items and also take the opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience the short delay may have caused."

The arrested man has been charged with burglary and will appear in the Magistrates Court tomorrow morning.
