Flags will be flown at half mast today as Guernsey pays tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore, who has died with Covid-19 at the age of 100.
The World War II Veteran became a national treasure last year for his now-iconic fundraising efforts, which saw him walk 100 laps of his garden in the month leading up to his 100th birthday.
Captain Moore has since received Royal Honours and has been celebrated for not only raising more than £30 million for the NHS, but also for raising public spirits during the first wave of the pandemic.
Following news of his passing yesterday, Guernsey Bailiff Richard McMahon paid tribute to Captain Moore, encouraging States members to join him in a round of applause for his life and work.
Mr McMahon has since commended the flying of flags in Guernsey at half-mast today until 20:00. He added that people should only raise flags if able to do so without breaching lockdown restrictions.
“In order not to break the letter or the spirit of the lockdown rules this request is to be followed ONLY if the flag would be put at half-mast by someone who is present on the site for legitimate reasons.
"That is, no one is to make a special trip to half-mast any flag, on the basis that it would not be essential work.”
