Local company commends government for solar stance

Tuesday 12 March 2024

A local company has publicly welcomed a move by the States of Guernsey to zero-rate the standby charge for all solar installations in the island.

The Little Green Energy Company said it is a "significant stride towards embracing renewable energy and fostering a more sustainable future for the island".

Energy charges were dropped for large scale renewables following a decision by the States Trading Supervisory Board earlier this year. These changes will come into effect from 1 April.

This move has been welcomed by the Little Green Energy Company which argues that the original standby charge "presented a barrier to the widespread, large-scale adoption of renewable energy generation in Guernsey. Reducing the charge to zero improves payback cycles for those looking to invest in self-generation. The decision also aligns with Guernsey’s Electricity Strategy and its transition to a low-carbon future".

Bob Beebe is the CEO of Little Green. He said: "This decision is a testament to Guernsey's dedication to sustainability and its recognition of the importance of renewable energy sources in the energy transition and journey to net zero.

"By reducing the Standby Charge to zero, the States of Guernsey has not only made solar PV installations more accessible but has also empowered more individuals and businesses to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future."
