Local coal suppliers have “sufficient stock” before UK ban

Sunday 23 April 2023

Local supplier of coal have sought to reassure customers that they have sufficient stocks of coal as the UK sets to ban the sale of traditional coal from 1 May.

House coal and wet wood sales have been outlawed through the Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) 2020 Law, as they are deemed the “most polluting fuels”. It means, from the 1 May, it’ll be illegal to sell loose coal to the public in the UK.

While the ban won’t be replicated in Guernsey, the impact of it may still be felt.

“Although the UK’s incoming ban on the sale of house coal from 1st May 2023 will not apply to Guernsey, whenever restrictions on the sale of a product is introduced in the UK, there is always a possibility of an indirect impact in Guernsey. However, local suppliers have reassured customers that they have sufficient stock,” said the President of the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure, Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez.

“In addition, under the UK’s ban, the sale of low smoke fuels (anthracite, semi-anthracite and low volatile steam coal) is still permitted.

The decision to ban loose coal was made to improve public air quality and reduce environmental pollution, which Deputy De Sausmarez is fully in favour of.

“We are fully supportive of reducing our use of fossil fuels, including coal, and expect to see this to continue to reduce over time, in line with both our climate change policy and energy policy as agreed by the States.”
