LISTEN: Training Ukraine's first female bomb disposal operators

Jersey donations to Ukraine have gone in part towards training EOD operators, who dispose of unexploded bombs and landmines across the country.

Friends of Ukraine-EOD have received £262,000 of funding from Jersey Overseas Aid so far, much of it going towards training the first female bomb disposal operators ever to be allowed in Ukraine.

The charity works with the MAT-Kosovo training centre in Kosovo to deliver EOD training.

But after the Ukrainian decree banning men from leaving the country, the only people who were able to attend the training sessions were women.

Uliana Yurenko, Head Technical Translator and Interpreter at MAT Kosovo, said: "Every Ukrainian, every responsible citizen, would say, has to think of how you can contribute to the defence of your country."

Ben Remfrey MBE, one of the founders of Friends of Ukraine-EOD, said that the originally Guernsey-based charity has now incorporated in Jersey too due to the level of support they have received from Jersey.

Based between Ukraine and Kosovo, Uliana has been a key part of creating the Ukrainian programme, translating materials for their students.

Express sat down with Uliana and Ben to discuss the training they deliver.

If you want to support their work, the Bailiff's Ukraine Appeal is open for donations.
