LISTEN: “Crazy amounts” of new businesses launched during pandemic

Friday 20 October 2023

350 new businesses reached out to the Digital Greenhouse during the pandemic, a figure which Programme Manager Ben Wratten said was “crazy”.

He was speaking to Express to help promote the Digital Greenhouse and Black Vanilla’s second local entrepreneurship survey, which will be used to better understand the hurdles, difficulties and benefits of setting up a business in Guernsey.

This year the team is specifically looking for input from people who’ve set up businesses up either during or after the pandemic.

“There was this ongoing narrative in the community about people being made redundant or being let go and this is kind of being launched to find out what those people are doing now,” said Chris Leaman from Black Vanilla.

“At the Digital Greenhouse we saw 350 new businesses come through during the pandemic, which was a crazy amount,” continued Ben from the Digital Greenhouse.

Everyone seemed to have that existential crisis and ask themselves what am I doing?’ – loads of people took that opportunity to try a new thing.

We’ve seen the pipeline of businesses coming through remaining strong, and those starting businesses are really energetic and ready to do it long term.”

The survey can be completed ONLINE and you can listen to the full interview below, or wherever you get your podcasts:
