Liberation Day: Fun on the piers

Thursday 09 May 2019

St Peter Port will be bustling with activity today in celebration of the 74th anniversary of Guernsey's Liberation, with a range of stalls, performances and family activities.

This year the Crown Pier has been set up as a 'Family Zone' featuring inflatables and local 'creation stations'.

People of all ages can have a go at graffiti art with Emma Domaille or acrylic pouring with Iris and Dora. The Guernsey-based craft company is also creating a giant flag mosaic and is encouraging the public to bring along anything they find which could form a part of the artwork.

Town-goers can get planting with Living Creations, which is running workshops where participants can create and take away their own miniature succulent garden for free. That will be followed by a community planting session later on when everyone will be invited to help plant up a garden boat to be donated to charity.

Meanwhile, children can get messy at the Wild Guernsey stall, becoming creative with plant and mineral materials but also learning about how food can be found in the wild, as it would have been during the Occupation when food was scarce.

Local talents are taking to the stage throughout the day offering more entertainment on the Crown Pier:

12:45 - Majorettes
14:00 - Morris Dancers
14:55 - Khukari Dance
15:00 - Nepalese Folk Dance
15:15 - Born to Move

On top of that, along the pier you will find inflatable castles, games, sumo wrestling and a climbing wall.

Organisers are also making the most of the Castle Emplacement this year which is home to lots of market, charity and craft stalls as well as more activities for children. That includes bouncy castles, Water Peddlerz and Aquativity Balls, vintage games and all-important public seating.

If you do fancy a sit down and a cup of tea you can head along to the Waitrose NAAFI Tea Tent on the Albany, which is offering a range of traditional tea and cakes in aid of Carers Guernsey along with a full line up of entertainment and 1940s-style fancy dress available:

11:15 - The Guernsey History in Action Group presents 'A Quiet War'
12:15 - Guernésiaise Showcase

The entertainment will continue outside the tent too with an interactive 'Wonder Women of the War' show at 13:30 and 15:30. Passers-by can meet the Thornycroft Girls and watch them make a life-sized kit car which children can actually ride in.

Cheerleading club The Rebellion Allstars are also performing opposite the NAAFI Tent throughout the day with 15 minute shows at 11:00, 12:00 and 12:45.

JustGames is offering some time away from the Liberation Day crowds though, providing a space between 11:00 and 16:00 where people can have a go at board games, card games and miniature games. You can also get away by heading to the Victoria Marina, where the Mary Irene Millar and the City of Bradford III are open to visitors between 11:00 and 14:00 and the HMS SMITER is welcoming members of the public onboard between 14:00 and 16:00.
