Liberate launches lockdown writing competition

Tuesday 09 February 2021

Liberate is hosting a LGBTQ+ writing competition during LGBT History month.

The inspiration for the competition came from one of the Liberate volunteers after they read 'The Lie' by William Dameron, a US-based publicist. In the book, he describes living a heteronormative life whilst hiding his homosexuality until he could hold it no longer.

"The Lie really struck a chord with lots of members of the Liberate team and we thought it would be wonderful to hear more about peoples experiences of being LGBTQ+," said Liberate CEO Ellie Jones.

"You don't have to identify as LBGTQ+ but your entry has to reflect the theme. The aim of the competition is to inform and educate people of the challenges of being LBGTQ+ today using the medium of creative writing to express themselves."

Mr Dameron has been confirmed as one of the judges for the competition, which has been sponsored by Imperium Trust.

"We were made aware of Liberate and the writing competition through our existing charitable support of Caritas," said Director Rhona Humphries.

"Liberate provide a great platform for the LGBTQ+ community and the writing competition initiative is another excellent platform for our integrated island community."

Entries are open to everyone across the Channel Islands, with categories for over 18’s and under 18’s. The winner of both categories will receive a £100 Amazon voucher.

More information is available HERE. There is a form on the website that you can fill in and upload your entry. Deadline for submissions is 1 March, with winners being announced on 1 May.
