Liberate launches LGBTQ+ writing competition

Monday 27 February 2023

Equality charity Liberate is bringing back a creative writing competition, launching it during LGBT History Month.

The writing competition has been around since 2021 and was launched after the idea was suggested by Liberate volunteer David.

He said: “I became interested in LBGTQ+ writing after reading the book entitled 'The Lie' by William Dameron, a US based publicist.

“He described living a heteronormative life whilst hiding his homosexuality until he could hold it no longer. It inspired me to read more LBGTQ+ accounts, both fact and fiction. I came up with the idea of launching, through Liberate, a writing competition. The idea is for everyone to be engaged with peoples stories or experiences with an LBGTQ+ theme.”

He said submissions don’t need to be from LGBTQ+ people, but do need to “reflect the theme”.

The competition is being sponsored by Imperium Trust. Director, Rhona Humphreys, said promoting inclusivity in Guernsey is very important.

She said: “The opportunity for individuals to express their thoughts in the writing is one we are pleased to support again for another year and I look forward to reading all of the entries which previously were both entertaining and inspiring.”

Anyone is welcome to make a submission and there’ll be two categories - over 18 and under 18 - with the winner of each receiving an Amazon voucher worth £100.

The competition closes on 16 April and you can find enter ONLINE.
