Learn self-defence for free to protect against assaults

Tuesday 12 March 2024

Business funding has opened up a new series of classes for nearly 100 islanders to learn the basics of self-defence this spring to protect against physical assaults.

Saffery Trust is supporting a series of one-hour sessions which are being run in partnership between the night-time safety charity SafetyNet and JackalBoxFit between March and May for anyone over the age of 16.

The idea emerged out of a social media poll which showed strong demand, but with concerns aired over cost.

SafetyNet Chair Poppy Murray said the response was “overwhelming” and would benefit the community.

The demand was clear; however, we had a few messages that the cost of classes would be a barrier for some. Saffery Trust’s generous donation in support of our aims, will make a huge difference.

“We hope that no one will ever need to use the training, however the sessions will undoubtedly boost confidence for the participants and help to prepare them should they ever find themselves in danger.”

Boxing coach Jimmy Lesbirel will lead the sessions, and hailed the benefits of the sport.

“I am a firm believer in the benefits of any type of exercise, but that boxing fitness in particular is fantastic for building both physical, mental and emotional strength,” he said.

“When SafetyNet approached me about running the classes I was more than happy to help becauseit’s important to me to give back, especially in a small community like ours.”

Saffery Trust Managing DirectorNick Batiste added: “We are delighted to support this initiative and are dedicated to promoting the health and wellbeing of our people, and the wider community; these classes will help to do just that”.

The classes will be held at Rock Health on Victoria Avenue between March 27 and May 25. Bookings can be made online throughJackalBoxFit.
