Ashes at Le Foulon to be moved

Thursday 27 June 2019

Some ashes at Le Foulon cemetery are being relocated within the grounds to make room for new cremators.

All ashes stored behind the plaques either side of the chapel will be moved to a new purpose-built granite building - also known as a 'columbarium' - next to the Garden of Rest.

Property Services, which manages Le Foulon crematorium and grounds, has said the relocation will be undertaken with the utmost respect.

The ashes are due to be moved in August, once building work on the new location is complete. The layout of plaques will remain the same.

The two new cremators are being installed to replace the island's only facility, which is now 17 years old. Plans were approved by the States in 2018 and work is due to begin later this year.

The two new units require an extension to the chapel and planning permission for the work was granted in March. The changes will also include the widening of the site entrance and more parking.

Notices have been placed at the existing columbarium and letters have been sent to family members where possible to let them know about the changes. However, Property Services has not been able to trace and contact all family members and is appealing for anyone who thinks their loved ones' ashes might be affected to contact Nigel Le Sauvage on 717000 for more information.
