Last fund-raising push for Children's Library project

Thursday 22 November 2018

As part of its fundraising efforts towards revamping its children’s facilities, the Guille-Allès Library is giving people a chance to engrave their name in history by 'naming a nook'.

There will be 300 shelving 'nooks' in the re-designed Children’s Library and for a minimum donation of £25 members of the public can choose a name to be engraved on a brass plaque which will be set below each one.

Inscriptions on these plates can be up to a maximum of 25 characters, and can bear the name of the donor or a friend/family member.

“We think this is a lovely idea which reflects the way that the community has helped us realise this great project. We are hopeful that all 300 nooks can be named in order to raise the last bit of money needed to make the space really special.” said Laura Milligan, Chief Librarian.

“The Children’s Library project is an exciting example of what is achievable by a community. It is a fun, creative project which provides spaces for all levels of reader. The design, although contemporary, is inspired by the magic of traditional libraries. It is utterly unique to our library. Naming a brass plaque provides a wonderful opportunity to show your individual support for the project.” said Oliver Westgarth, Design Director CCD Architects.

Phase one of the Children’s Library Project was completed in July, in order to allow the Children’s Library to be operational over the summer holidays. Phase two, which comprises new shelving, lighting and furnishings, has begun and will be completed by the end of 2018. The new design will create an inspiring space where children can be encouraged to learn and read for pleasure.
