Lack of contractor delayed Grandes Rocques grassland work

Monday 12 August 2024

The inability to find a contractor to lay soil on the Grandes Rocques overflow car park since March led to it being reopened for the summer, Environment & Infrastructure has confirmed.

The car park was closed in March to improve biodiversity in the area, but the States were unable to get anyone to shift leftover soil from works to Cobo kiosk onto the land before native seeds were scattered.

Petitions started for it to be permanently reopened were not the reason the decision was taken to move the boulders to allow access this summer, E&I added.

“The decision to reopen the area temporarily was based on the fact that, with the work having not commenced, it was felt it was pragmatic to reopen this for a temporary period during the summer holidays when there are the highest number of visitors to the area.”

It’s still committed to closing the car park and return it to an area of coastal grassland once the school summer holidays are over.
