It's time to show off our Bailiwick

Tuesday 11 June 2024

Those involved in organising King Charles III's first visit to Guernsey as Monarch have said it is a "great privilege" and gives us a chance to show off our "Bailiwick's culture, heritage, produce and environment".

His Majesty will be in Guernsey for a day trip on Tuesday 16 July accompanied by his Queen Consort, Her Majesty Queen Camilla.

The Bailiff led Bailiwick dignitaries in expressing his pleasure at the planned visit, this morning.

“It will be a great privilege to welcome Their Majesties to the Bailiwick for the first time as King and Queen; the year after their Coronation," said Sir Richard McMahon.

"Their visit this summer shows just how special the relationship between the Crown and the Islands is.”

The Royal couple will only be able to visit Guernsey on this occasion, due to time constraints - but the programme of events is being planned to encompass the whole Bailiwick.

The Lieutenant Governor is the Monarch's representative in the Bailiwick. Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell CB, CBE said each island will be represented.

“Their Majesties are passionate about meeting people from across communities. We want that to happen as much as possible during this visit, as well as showing off the Bailiwick’s culture, heritage, produce and environment.

"As part of that, we look forward to welcoming representatives from Alderney and Sark to Guernsey on the day of the visit.”

Publicly accessible events are being planned for the town sea front and piers, with Guernsey's Chief Minister saying this will enable the islands' to demonstrate their commitments to some of His Majesty's personal interests.

“As is well known, His Majesty also has a special interest in global efforts to combat climate change," explained Deputy Lyndon Trott. "We are looking forward to showcasing our initiatives to support those efforts and promote sustainability across a range of sectors. That includes the pioneering green finance initiatives of our main economic sector, which have a global impact.”

Sark's Seigneur similarly said that his island is keen to welcome the Royal couple.

Major Christopher Beaumont said a "Sark road show" will travel to Guernsey to highlight their culture and community values.

"Sark is very much looking forward to presenting the best of the Island to Their Majesties," he said.

"A Sark road show will be travelling to Guernsey so that Their Majesties can meet as many of the community and be introduced to the best of our lives here. It is intended to involve ceremonial activities, the whole school, cultural activities including arts and crafts, local produce, those who were living on Sark during the occupation, welfare and safeguarding provision, the emergency services and the progress of the Community Power Project.

"It is hoped that everyone who wishes to see Their Majesties will have an opportunity to do so."
