Katie Allisette: Five things I'd change about Guernsey

Friday 01 June 2018

Childcare worker Katie Allisette has a positive outlook on life, which she tries to share with others - so Express asked her opinion on our island.

The mum of one; who describes herself as a nature lover and Reiki practitioner, and said she is "often seen dancing, laughing and drinking peppermint tea," is heading back into childcare after an 18 month stint working in adult mental health care, but she managed to find the time to tell us what five things she'd change about Guernsey:

1) Let's take a more holistic approach to life

I would like to see holistic practices used more widely across the island.

This would give people alternatives to the standard medical route which is often the only one offered, when they are suffering with both their mental and physical health. We should be looking at tackling these issues in other ways.

2) Social prescribing

Following on from number one, I would like Social Prescribing to be made available to all, as standard practice.

Our community is packed full of wonderful non-clinical services, all promoting health and well being through a variety of ways. We can all benefit from using these services, which in turn offers wider benefits to our island.

3) Education!

I think it is time that we stopped trying to push square pegs into round holes when it comes to education.

We should be creating a positive learning environment for all students, including those that don't 'tick the boxes'. We know that children all learn differently, so rather than trying to fit them all into the same way of learning, why don't we split them into groups and find an approach or environment in which they can all thrive.

I think we should use families more - how about having Grandparent helpers regularly? That way our children and young people can learn to respect others, and learn about their heritage and more about the culture of our unique little island. We should also be training up teachers and LSAs as 'Forest School Practitioners'. This way we would be able to make great use of the natural beauty that surrounds us.

4) More Guerrnesiais

I would like to see 'patois' used on all road names, shop signs and other public signs - and I think it should be taught in all schools from a young age.

There are lots of initiatives already going on to try and save our language, but Guernsey French will die out otherwise and how sad that would be?

5) Transport links

I am as frustrated as many other people by the current transport links to and from Guernsey.

If our inter-island links can't be improved cost-wise, could they please be improved timings wise? A full day trip to our sister isle in particular would be a great start!
