“It reflects a good two years of hard work”

Wednesday 11 August 2021

Guernsey's sixth form students are celebrating their 'A' Level results, having overcome two years of unexpected challenges to achieve impeccable pass rates.

The Guernsey Grammar School & Sixth Form Centre, Elizabeth College and Ladies College all reported 100% 'A' Level pass rates, with hundreds of students picking up their results yesterday.

“I’m very pleased with my results,” said Guernsey Grammar School & Sixth Form Centre student Jim Hibbs. “I think it reflects a good two years of hard work.”

Mr Hibbs picked up a ‘C’ in Physics, an ‘A’ in PE, and a ‘B’ in Maths. “I’m now going to Manchester MET University to study Sport & Exercise Science,” he said.

The results have been well received by the principals of all of the island's sixth form schools.

"The students and their teachers should be congratulated on these achievements,” said the Principal of the Grammar School, Kieran James.

His sentiment was shared by the Principal of Elizabeth College, Jenny Palmer, who expressed great pride in her students.

The outgoing cohort will now be leaving school and either starting work straight away, continuing their studying, or taking a gap year.

“I’ve been offered a job at PwC, and I’m going to start next week,” said Malachy Scullion after collecting his results.

“I got a ‘B’ in Economics, a ‘B’ in Maths, and a ‘C’ in Religious Studies. In one subject I overachieved and in one subject I underachieved, so it all balanced out and I’m really happy – it’s exactly what I needed!” he said.

Izzy Jones said she was nervous at the beginning of the day. After getting her results, her offer from Nottingham Trent University was sealed.

“I’m going to do Media and Fashion Marketing and they’ve just confirmed my place, so I can relax,” she said.

Many of the students Express spoke to were excited to take the next step in their lives, like Henry Sebire who got ‘B,C,D’ in History, Philosophy & Ethics, and English.

“I will be heading into a compliance officer role; I’m looking forward to that and moving on from school,” he said.

The President of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, has thanked the staff for persevering through a difficult few years.

“The second lockdown and the ongoing pandemic have just added to the challenges this cohort of students have faced in recent years, and the fact they have achieved such strong results reflects how hard they have worked to overcome those challenges.

“Of course, the grading system this year has put additional pressure on our staff, and I would like to thank them all for their extremely hard work in assessing all of the students in a professional way,” she said.
