Help needed for Liberation Day’s 80th anniversary

Sunday 08 December 2024

The Association of Guernsey Charities (AGC) and the Education, Sport and Culture Committee (ESC) are looking for volunteers to help with the upcoming 80th Liberation Day celebrations.

In their call out to the public, they've emphasised the need for support in St Peter Port, along the Cavalcade route, at parish events, and other potential areas.

The AGC are coordinating the efforts, saying that the Liberation Day Volunteer Team will play a vital role in the event.

They’re looking for 'anyone and everyone', from those with just a few hours to spare, to people eager to take on more demanding volunteer roles, or leadership roles, said Chair Wayne Bulpitt.

“We are hoping to build on the wonderful support the community gave the 2023 Island Games when we had an incredible response to help us deliver that fantastic week of sport," he said.

“We are launching a new online platform for volunteering next year, which we hope to trial with the Liberation Day volunteers. The platform will enable charities to advertise their volunteering opportunities and make it much easier for anyone interested in volunteering to find a suitable match. Volunteers are the backbone of the charitable sector, and this new platform will help boost volunteering.”

Deputy Sue Aldwell is a member of ESC. She's been closely involved in organising the main events.

“Liberation Day is such an important occasion for so many in our community as we remember all of those who were evacuated or continued to live on the island during the Occupation," she said.

“The day’s proceedings will not be possible without the help of volunteers and with 2025 marking the 80th anniversary, we are expecting large numbers in both St Peter Port and at the parish events. Volunteering allows you to be at the very heart of the celebration and your support is needed to ensure the milestone celebrations run smoothly.”

The Liberation Day Volunteer Team say they will be in touch with those who are interested in the new year, with further details about available roles and timeslots, and if you’d like to register your interest, you can find out more and get involved on the Liberation Day website HERE.
