A busy year ahead!

Monday 06 January 2020

With the 2021 Island Games little over a year away, teams of people in Guernsey are working tirelessly to get preparations well and truly underway.

Although organisers made a lot of progress throughout 2019, this is where the hard work really begins.

"We anticipate that we will need around 800 to 1,000 volunteers for the Games and we have already started the recruitment process," a spokesperson for the organising committee said.

They are also seeking around 80 attaches, who will play a key part in liaising with organisers and member islands.

"We've also run a joint campaign with St John Guernsey in order to recruit additional first aid volunteers," the spokesperson continued. "A team from St John travelled to Gibraltar and provided great support for the 2019 Games. We look forward to continuing our work with St John to help provide first aid support for the Guernsey 2021 Games and other important island events."

Further volunteer opportunities are expected to be announced early this year.

"Initial invites have been sent out and all 23 member islands have submitted their provisional numbers," the spokesperson explained. "That will enable us to draft our initial programme of events over the next few weeks."

The committee has been in close contact with all of the 14 sports associations, with site visits to all Games venues due to take place over the course of this month. That includes the athletics track at Footes Lane, which has recently been resurfaced in time for the event.

"We must just say a huge thank you to all of our sponsors for the Guernsey 2021 NatWest International Island Games," the spokesperson said. "Without their support we would not be able to host the event."
