All of Intersurgical's staff in Guernsey have been laid off, with immediate effect, after the company announced its local facility is closing today.
The manufacturing firm has had a base in Guernsey for nearly 40 years and is believed to employ 90 people locally.
A woman who confirmed the news to Express this morning said staff were informed by email yesterday that a meeting was being held at 09:00 today.
During that meeting staff were told their employment was terminated with immediate effect. Most staff left the site immediately with a few staying back to clear desks.
Shortly after Express had spoken with a member of staff at the Guernsey branch of Intersurgical a statement was issued.

The statement confirmed the news, and blamed the decision on "global economic uncertainty".
"Unfortunately this site has become uncompetitive in the global economic environment and has suffered continued financial losses, which Intersurgical is no longer able to subsidise," the statement read.
Charles Bellm, Group Managing Director, is believed to have flown into Guernsey for this morning's meeting. He said:
"It is with sadness and regret that we have decided to close our Guernsey site. We have done all we can to try and turn the loss making site around, but we simply cannot continue to sustain the current financial losses brought on by a number of factors outside of our control."

The total workforce number has not yet been formally confirmed with Express but it's thought to be 90.
Mr Bellm said some of them have been with the company for many years and he deeply regrets the situation they are now in.
"We recognise that this will come as a heavy blow to our Guernsey workforce, some of whom have been with us for many years.
"We would like to thank them for the contribution they have made to the business over the years."
Intersurgical stated that there will be no further comment at this time.
