More than 400 people have registered their interest in acting as bone marrow donors with the Anthony Nolan Trust, during a two day campaign in Guernsey to try and find a match for a local man suffering with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
As part of the appeal, which saw registration drives in town and at Bels Football Club and Guernsey Post, the Guernsey Friends of Anthony Nolan have also raised £13,300 to pass onto the Anthony Nolan charity in order to recruit even more donors.
The family of Mark Fallaize had previously pleaded with young men, aged between 16 and 30 to register saying they could save a life, either that of Mr Fallaize or another person in the British Isles.
Mr Fallaize had been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in 2016 and despite chemotherapy initially being successful, a Bone Marrow Biopsy earlier this year saw him diagnosed with Myeloid Dysplastic Syndrome which requires a bone marrow transplant.
The Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust and its Guernsey branch have been appealing for potential donors to come forward on Mark's behalf since then.
That plea was heard with 418 individuals registering with the charity during just four public events this week, in town, at the Bels football club and at Guernsey Post, where Mr Fallaize works.
They were looking for men aged 16-30 in particular but anyone can register as they could be a donor match for another patient. The charity had a team of people in Guernsey this week but for anyone who still wants to register or find out more email gsyfriendsant@hotmail.com
