Hundreds of cost saving suggestions sent in

Over 500 suggestions have been submitted by more than 230 people in a public survey as the States looks to save up to £16m from public services by 2028.

The survey was launched following the tax review debate, with Policy & Resources instructed by politicians to look to save between £10m and £16m in five years with consultation from the community.

The States of Guernsey say savings must be made as the proportion of working population shrinks and the numbers of people requiring more public services increases.

The public have been asked to submit up to three suggestions of no more than 500 words to say what services could be cut or stopped, how additional public revenue could be raised, or if services could be restructured.

Deputy Dave Mahoney, Chair of the sub-Committee and Policy & Resources member, praised the “very good” number of responses and said each will be considered by the team.

“As promised, we’ve given the community an early and open opportunity here to put forward their views so we can see what people are thinking, and where they believe the opportunities lie… with two still weeks still to go, there’s plenty of time for more people to contribute.”

Deputy Sasha Kazantseva-Miller, member of the sub-Committee, said the responses so far have “exceeded expectations”.

“We all have an interest in identifying the best ways of reducing costs and seeing efficiencies because we are all users of public services and pay towards funding them. We are keen to see not only new and fresh ideas but also the public sentiment for revisiting some of the older suggestions that might have been discussed previously."
