Holocaust Day to be marked in Guernsey

Sunday 27 January 2019

Holocaust Memorial Day will be marked with a Service of Remembrance at Guernsey's White Rock Memorial at midday today.

The memorial service will be led by the Very Reverend Tim Barker, at the memorial site which is next to the pedestrian entrance to North Beach near the Liberation Monument.

The 30 minute service, which is open to everyone, regardless of their religious affiliation, will start at the memorial to the slave labourers with an introduction to the commemoration, a prayer and the laying of a wreath by the Bailiff.

The service will then move to the memorial to the Guernsey Eight, where those attending will keep silent before a prayer of recollection and the laying of a second wreath by the Bailiff.

The commemoration will conclude at the memorial to the three Jewish women who were deported from Guernsey during the Occupation and who were never seen alive again.

While a silence will be observed in their honour, the mourners’ Kaddish will be read by John Peters, a member of Guernsey's Jewish community. The Bailiff will then lay a third wreath.

“The Commemoration remembers the victims of the Holocaust and other acts of genocide both in Guernsey and around the world the day serves to ensure that its lessons are learned by future generations” said the Dean of Guernsey.

Following the commemoration at the White Rock, there will be a reception held at the Town Church between 12:30 and 13:15, with light refreshments and music from the Town Church Choir.
