The Health Improvement Commission in 2021: “Busier and more impactful”

Wednesday 27 April 2022

The Health Improvement Commission says its actions are having a positive impact on people’s live in Guernsey, after the release of its third annual report.

The report delves into the work of the Commission in 2021, revealing an expanding team and growing social media presence.

The charity was launched in 2018 and delivers five streams of health improvement: Substance Use, Eat Well, Bailiwick Social Prescribing, Healthier Weight and Be Active.

The Commission validates its existence with statistics drawn from both government surveys and its own research. In 2020 the charity commissioned a research project that revealed 15,000 people living with obesity in the Bailiwick, however it found relevant weight management services were unavailable.

Subsequently it launched a business case to the Committee for Health & Social Care to ask for further funding to support these people.

“Looking forwards, we have exciting plans across all of our workstreams for 2022,” said the Commission's Chairman, Stuart Falla CBE.

“The end of 2022 will mark the end of our initial agreement with the States. For the Commission to continue to build on the strong foundations that we have laid in our first three years, to retain and recruit excellent staff and to invest in long-term actions to improve health aligned with government priorities, we now need a long-term commitment.”

The Chief Executive Officer at the Commission said the 2021 annual report is a credit to the hard work of its team.

“It is very rewarding that we are able to build on the strong foundations that we have put in place and deliver positive impacts on people’s health.”
