"[He] does not shy away from taking the difficult but right decision"

Thursday 02 May 2024

Deputy Marc Leadbeater has been elected Vice-President of the Committee for Health & Social Care following the resignation of his former colleague, Deputy Tina Bury.

She had been the HSC Vice-President until recently resigning from that position and the committee citing concerns over transparency.

Deputy Gavin St Pier was last week elected on to HSC as a committee member, to replace Deputy Bury.

He and the other HSC committee members have now chosen Deputy Leadbeater to be their Vice-President.

Deputy Leadbeater is in his second term of office, and has been on HSC since the October 2020 election. He said he's ready to rise to his new, more senior committee role.

"I am very pleased to have been elected by the Committee to fill the role vacated by Deputy Tina Bury," said Deputy Leadbeater.

"I recognise that the role of Vice-President brings with it additional responsibilities and commitments, and I am determined to rise to the challenge. I will give it my all during the remainder of this political term, as our Committee continues to focus efforts on managing the ever-increasing demand for our services."

The President of the Committee for Health & Social Care is Deputy Al Brouard. He welcomed Deputy Leadbeater's appointment as Vice-President.

"Deputy Leadbeater has proven himself to be an excellent Committee member during the last three years," he said.

"He is knowledgeable about our very wide mandate, a team player and does not shy away from taking the difficult but right decision – a very important trait for our Committee given the challenges we face. I’m delighted that Marc is stepping up to the role of Vice-President."

On the appointment of Deputy St Pier to the committee for HSC, Deputy Brouard has said he and his colleagues "welcome" him and "we look forward to working with him".

In a message to States Members yesterday, Deputy Brouard confirmed the new committee roles that have been allocated which includes appointing Deputy Leadbeater and Deputy St Pier to the Our Hospital Modernisation Programme. That unit is facing "challenges" said Deputy Brouard, after the recent revelation that costs involved in the project have rocketed. "This was caused by behaviours and not of governance", he said.

Deputy Aidan Matthews has been appointed to the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) Programme, and Dr George Oswald, who is HSC’s Non-voting Member has been appointed to the ‘Our Community Services’ Programme.

In his message to his political colleagues, Deputy Brouard said all of these roles may be affected by a review, in the light of the commissioned work by the Head of the Public Service in terms of whether politicians are best placed on Programme or Project Boards.
