Happy Halloween: Advice for trick or treaters

Wednesday 31 October 2018

Superheroes, monsters and other crazy costumes will be on display around Guernsey tonight, as trick-or-treaters take to the streets to see how many sweets they can collect.

But with Halloween also comes some responsibility, and Guernsey Police have issued advice and reminders to any people planning on trick or treating this evening.

"We wanted to give everyone some sensible advice and gentle reminders on how to have a safe and fun evening," a spokesperson said.

"If you're going trick or treating, make sure you go with an adult, and your parents or carer know where you're going and when to expect you back. Only go to neighbourhoods you know, and houses you'll be welcome at. Respect posters asking you not to trick or treat. Don't go trick or treating alone - stay with your group. Eggs and flour are for baking - don't throw them. Be careful crossing roads in the dark - make sure you have a torch and some bright clothing."

Guernsey Police have also produced a poster people can use to ask trick or treaters to not knock on their doors.

The idea behind the poster is so people can politely and easily communicate to potential costume-clad people that they do not partake in the celebrations and do not want to be disturbed.

The Police spokesperson added: "If you'd rather trick-or-treaters didn't disturb you, download and print the poster below, then place it on your door or in your window. We've also printed out copies which can be picked up from the police station's front desk.

"Our patrols aren't afraid of ghosts and ghouls, and will be ready to respond to any trouble should it arise. They also wouldn't say no to any sweets you want to offer them. Above all, have fun and remember not to do anything which means Halloween has a nasty legacy on your life."
