Guinness World Record: Got your back

Thursday 20 June 2019

Two local charities are encouraging people in Guernsey to demonstrate "solidarity" and "strength in numbers" as part of a Guinness World Record attempt.

Guernsey Mind and Male Uprising Guernsey aim to break the record for the 'Longest Human Chain of People Patting Each Other on the Back'.

The attempt will take place at this year's Harbour Carnival along the St Peter Port seafront from 17:30 on 19 July.

With the record currently standing at 824 people, the charities are hoping to see more than 1,000 carnival-goers take part in the challenge and raise awareness of the support they offer.

"Giving a few minutes of your time, standing behind each other, patting each other on the back will send a powerful message of support, showing the Bailiwick of Guernsey stands strongly behind the local Guernsey Mind and MUG charities," said a spokesperson for the event. "Solidarity and strength in numbers will demonstrate that we have the back of friends, family, teammates, work colleagues and neighbours."

Participants can pick up a numbered wristband from points outside Marks & Spencers and at the Weighbridge - where the chain will begin and end. They will then be directed to a specific area to join the line.

At around 18:15 a siren will sound to mark the start of the record attempt, which will continue for one minute and will be verified by individual witnesses.

Despite there being no entrance fee, anyone wishing to take part is asked to register their entered beforehand by emailing info@mug.gg. This will also give participants the chance to ask for a Guinness World Record certificate which will be sent out after the event.

All those who get involved will be offered a free 'Knot on our Watch' rope bracelet which have been created by the two charities.

The event will accommodate people of all ages and abilities.
