Guernsey’s Electricity Strategy to be published within the next few months

Thursday 13 April 2023

An updated Electricity Strategy will imminently be brought to the States Assembly for debate, after additional work was undertaken to make sure it “achieves its purpose”.

The States of Guernsey approved the Energy Policy in 2020 and in doing so instructed the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure to work on an updated Electricity Strategy.

Its aim will be to help the island achieve the decarbonisation objectives outlined in the Energy Policy – achieving net zero - as well as supporting a resilient supply of power to the community. The incoming strategy will outline Guernsey Electricity’s role in the marketplace and the route away from fossil fuels.

“To ensure that the Electricity Strategy achieves its purpose, we requested additional modelling and information, which means that we’re currently expecting to publish the Electricity Strategy on or before 5th May in time for it to be considered by the States at the meeting at the start of July,” said Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, President of E&I.

“This additional work will also help us in addressing some of the questions raised through our ongoing engagement with industry representatives.

Deputy de Sausmarez continued: “With our demand for electricity increasing, we have to address the question of how we can meet this growing demand whilst ensuring that our supply is affordable, secure and limits our impact on the environment. We’ve engaged with the energy industry, the regulator and business stakeholders to make sure that the Electricity Strategy provides this balanced and effective way forward to meet our future demand.”

E&I has consulted with the industry and held a series of energy workshops with various stakeholders, while it builds on a massive piece of work that deputies will be asked to vote on later this year. Deputy de Sausmarez has previously suggested that the decisions her committee will be bringing to the States “will be among the most important of this political term and arguably this generation”.
