Guernsey's 'death stairs'

Wednesday 04 September 2024

A recent visitor to the island has showcased one of the 'best' dodgy staircases in the island to hundreds of thousands of people.

The Facebook group 'Death Stairs' has more than half a million members, and a few days ago a post was shared in it purportedly showing a residential property in the island.

Jeremy Sedgley was staying in an unidentified 'Airbnb' locally when he was taken by surprise by the staircase.

With two triangular shaped steps leading to a wall, and two steps up to different exit points, the staircase met the criteria for 'Death Stairs'.

Mr Sedgley's post received nearly 500 'likes' and more than 100 comments, mostly from people querying why there are two steps leading to a wall.

A quick search through the group led us to other Guernsey 'Death Stairs' too, including a view up Constitution Steps shared by Tracey Trenchard last year.

People were not surprised she has lived in her home for 30 years with one person commenting: "Who wants to move furniture down those?"

Others shared in the group so far include steps up from bays, down to a beach, and ones built by the German Occupying forces.
