Guernsey’s answer to MOT put out to tender

The States of Guernsey is looking for garages to help roll-out MOT-style inspections.

The decision has been made to bring in mandatory technical inspections of vehicles in Guernsey in order to protect people's right to drive in Europe when the UK leaves the EU.

Discussions have been held with people in the motor industry to try and find a company or partnership willing and able to start a testing regime in Guernsey. Public service and commercial vehicles are among the first that are expected to need the new checks.

The final product will not be exactly the same as the UK’s MOT, with less frequent inspections one of the most notable differences.

Commercial vehicles will have to be tested annually, while a 3.5 tonne car will be tested once it is five years old and then once every three years thereafter.

The phased introduction of vehicle testing has been altered due to the current pandemic; however, the pieces will need to start falling into place next year. The tender can be found here.
