Music Bursary issues first awards

Tuesday 31 May 2022

The Board of the Guernsey Music Bursary has announced the first local music students to be awarded bursaries.

The awards were allocated after a rigorous interview process by a selection panel. Four bursaries were granted for £2,500 each for the next year of study.

The bursaries were issued to Louise Madden (University of Manchester), Annabell Pizzey (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), Jack Tostevin-Hall (Royal Academy of Music) and Maisie Whitman (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Drama).

The recipients will also benefit from mentoring opportunities to assist them in the transition from being music students to becoming professional musicians. These opportunities will be offered by individuals and organisations working closely with the Guernsey Music Bursary.

Mentoring opportunities were also extended to Emily Linane and Jacob Wright as part of the scheme.

The selection panel comprised Jonathan Bates, a keen Guernsey music lover, Hilary Finzi, an international musician and tutor, Mervyn Grand, the former Head of the Guernsey Music Service, and Stephen Ainsworth, the chair of Guernsey Music Bursary.

All shortlisted applicants were interviewed by the panel and assessed on a number of criteria, including their musical experience, aspirations and their contribution to the music scene in Guernsey.

Mr Ainsworth said: "The Panel was extremely impressed at the musical talent that Guernsey has been producing and congratulated all the applicants on their achievements.

"These bursaries are only possible as a result of the generous donations to Guernsey Music Bursary, which has enabled the bursary arrangements to be launched."

The Directors of the Guernsey Music Bursary said the awards act as "an important catalyst in enabling more of the island’s talented young musicians to forge careers as professional musicians".

"While we are delighted at the level of donations that have already been made to the Guernsey Music Bursarywhich is registered as a charity, we continue to invite donations from any interested individual, trust, corporation or other entity in order to help us build up a reserve," they said.

"This will enable us to increase the size and number of bursaries in future years and will strengthen even further the island’s strong musical heritage by supporting Guernsey’s leading musicians of the future."
