Guernsey icon artwork to be exhibited

Sunday 01 July 2018

An artist renowned for representations of iconic images will be exhibiting the start of a new collection at the Coach House Gallery from today.

Jersey artist, Jools Holt, started her Jersey Icon Series five years ago, marking a turn in her artistic practice. She is now showcasing her artwork in Guernsey as she has started on a 'Guernsey Icon' collection.

Ms Holt said: "I will be introducing the start of the Guernsey Icon Series and following it up with further visits. My artwork is a contemporary take on traditional views, relics and features of the Channel Islands and has a pop art feel and a fun element. I have been a trainer, internet teacher and web designer and now a full time artist. So looking forward to seeing the island again this weekend."

Talking about the exhibition she said: "I have made icons out of Rousse Kiosk, Castle Cornet, Vale Castle, Petit Bot, Le Petit Bistro, The Britannia Real Ale Bar and others as well as the 50 Jersey Icons including Archirondel Tower, Mont Orgueil and St Ouen's Bay."

"My artwork is a mix of photography, paint and print."

Previously, Ms Holt confessed she had never settled on a style. She went from being a "very eclectic artist" who sculpted and engraved wood, to working only on the series which focuses on the sites, buildings and best-loved features of island life: elements which are treasured by islanders and visitors alike.

The iconic Jersey Cow, which was the first image in the Jersey series, Ms Holt explains: "The idea for the series came from one Jersey Cow down St. Peter's Valley. I played with the image and being a fan of pop art and Andy Warhol, I added a bit of that into it. The idea for the series was to go out and photograph traditional things, such as castles, that we pass everyday and bring them to life, make them more contemporary."

Ms Holt added: "Of course with the new Icon collection in Guernsey I will have to do the Guernsey Cow!"

"I do a lot of work in schools and colour has a lot of impact on children. This is how colour got into the series mainly primary colours. It was a big change for me."
