Guernsey Electricity wants your views

Saturday 15 December 2018

Guernsey Electricity has begun stage two of its consultation to review how it charges for electricity in the future, in order to ensure that the company both meets the rapid changes in technology and is fair for all consumers.

This second stage of the consultation project will run until Sunday 6 January.

Members of public can either complete an online survey which they can access HERE, or drop into Guernsey Electricity’s office at Electricity House, Northside, Vale between 09:00 and 17:00, Monday to Friday where someone will be available to talk through the survey and answer any questions.

Researchers have also completed a programme of face-to-face interviews at a pop-up shop in the High Street over the past few days.

The initiative follows customer workshops and interviews with on-island stakeholders by an independent market research company Explain, which is providing feedback and comments that will help the utility firm work out what future electricity bills will look like.

Alan Bates, Guernsey Electricity’s Chief Executive, said the consultation presents the much-needed chance to gather the necessary information to provide a bill structure that reflects the way we use energy.

"Everyone in Guernsey has a stake in how electricity is generated, used and charged, so I would encourage islanders to participate in the next stage of our consultation. We want to understand everyone’s views. We are acutely aware that the structure of our bills needs to evolve and we want to get this consultation right for the long term. We are seeing customers making the most of small generation technologies, such as solar power and other renewables, which impacts what they require from the electricity grid. We support the use of renewables on the island, but it is vital that the grid is maintained so a back-up supply is always available to these customers.

"Of course, some customers are not in a position to produce their own electricity and rely on the services of Guernsey Electricity at all times. We are therefore committed to offering a bill structure that takes into account customers’ varying electricity needs and fairly distributes the grid costs across all customers."

Results from the two-month consultation will be made public in Spring 2019.
