Guernsey Arts: What's on

Friday 05 July 2024

From inclusive community projects and creative showcases in the park to delving deep into the structures of sculpture and science fiction...

Here’s everything you need to know about the arts this week.

Ten Years of the Sunflower Project

On the 6th July, the Youth Commission team will be in Market Square to mark ten years of the Sunflower Project. There’ll be a whole line up of fun activities, including Arts & Crafts sessions, Free Yoga Tasters, Princess Meet and Greets, Sunflower Ted and Construction of the Support Sunflower.

Led by the Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney, The Sunflower Project is a support service for children and young people who are experiencing a bereavement or serious illness within their family. Arts activities can be a very helpful and therapeutic way of processing difficult emotions and feelings. Guernsey Arts are very proud to support the valuable work of The Sunflower Project and will be there on the day to lead arts sessions!

Shapes and Shadows at the Greenhouse Gallery

Guernsey Arts are thrilled to celebrate sculptor Ted McDonaugh, in his first solo exhibition after decades of skillfully creating abstract pieces from stone. 'Shapes and Shadows' will be on display at the Greenhouse Gallery from 5th July until 18th August.

Meticulously hand carved from Caen Limestone, Ted's work has its own distinctive interactions with the light when focused upon. Shapes and Shadows are built onto the stone as each sculpture is viewed in the round. Traditional techniques combine with conceptual thought processes in this unique and exciting exhibition.

The stone used is Caen Limestone from St. Joseph's Church which was constructed in the mid 19th Century. This stone has also been partially used in other notable buildings such as Canterbury Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London.

Chris Foss: A Sci-Fi Journey

Art for Guernsey presents the work of illustrator Chris Foss in Chris Foss: A Sci-Fi Journey, at the Art for Guernsey Gallery, Mansell Street, St Peter Port from July 3rd to September 7th 2024.

Not only has he illustrated numerous book covers by sci-fi heavyweights such as Isaac Asimov and E.E Doc Smith, he’s also provided design and concept work on several major films, including Dune, Alien, A.I., Superman, Flash Gordon and Guardians of the Galaxy. This is definitely an exhibition that will get your family talking and inspired to create.

The exhibition features new works by Chris, plus a selection of career-defining and Guernsey-focused artworks and prints, many with bespoke illustrative additions, alongside sketches and supporting media. Do not miss this amazing show by Art for Guernsey!
