Dolly, who washed up at Fort Doyle yesterday, is the eighth seal pup to come into the GSPCA’s care this season, making it the highest number under the care at one time, and the charity has called on the public for help.
She joins Doyle, Grinch and Baby Shark – all rescued in Guernsey – and Didier, Maya, Faulkner and Jem who were rescued in Jersey.
She is the second this year to be found at the northern fort, and she and Doyle are in intensive care, while the rest of the pups have recovered and are in the pools.
Geoff George GSPCA, Head of Marine Mammals, said a call was received yesterday afternoon about a suspected injured pup on the north coast.
“GSPCA team member Neil Hughes and I attended where there was another very poorly pup.
“Dolly is not the thinnest seal pup we have rescued as she is 27kgs, but she is very dehydrated with a heavy worm burden, chest infection and wounds on her flippers.”
Mr George said Faulkner and Jem are recovering well, with the GSPCA considering releasing them back into Jersey waters “very soon”.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said the number of seals requiring round the clock care is proving a challenge for resources.
“We have several challenges and really need help. One was storage, and we must say a huge thanks to Ferryspeed who are kindly housing the pallets of fish we are using for the seal pups, it is really appreciated.
“We do need mackerel and herring if anyone has any - we need in-date human edible quality to ensure we give the seal pups the best diet and chance to build their health.
“The recent months have seen many challenges as many of our outer aviaries, pens, fences and equipment were sadly damaged or destroyed due to Storm Ciaran.”
