Green waste sites reopen today

Monday 27 April 2020

Anyone who has been gardening during the lockdown will finally be able to offload their green waste from today, as two sites will be open in Guernsey - but under strict regulations.

The Chouet site will reopen along with a temporary site at Longue Hougue.

The main site at Chouet had been closed since the covid-19 lockdown restrictions were introduced on all but essential travel, but it will reopen from 08:00 Monday 27 April.

Anticipating a backlog as the green waste site has been closed for more than a month, a temporary drop off site will be open from today at the main waste management facility at Longue Hougue.

Guernsey Waste is also hoping to set up at least one other temporary drop off point so that Chouet and Longue Hougue don't become too busy. That will be in the south of the island, to help with the expected demand and to reduce journey times for those wanting to use the green waste sites. That will not be available until later in the week however.

The Chouet and Longue Hougue sites will be manned, to help manage traffic flows as both are expected to be busy.

The number of vehicles allowed on site will be controlled, and drop off bays have been arranged so that everyone can observe social distancing guidelines. Both sites will be open between 08:00 and 16:00, Monday to Saturdays and between 08:00 and 12:00 on Sundays until further notice.

The Household Waste and Recycling Centre will also reopen on Thursday 30 April, but to start with will be accepting a limited range of items.

Guernsey Waste is advising everyone to avoid non-urgent visits for the first few days to help cope with the demand.

Site staff will be unable to assist in unloading vehicles.
