"Going real"

Wednesday 24 April 2019

A local group is encouraging Guernsey parents and carers to ditch disposable nappies as part of 'Real Nappy Week'.

The Guernsey Real Nappy Network is holding a range of informational events this week, offering independent advice and practical support.

"Some people still think of the traditional and, let's face it, old-fashioned terry cloth nappy and the iconic nappy pin," said a spokesperson for the network. "These days washable nappies are colourful, shaped, easy to use and easy to wash even at 40 degrees. They can also save you money, especially when compared to the cost of disposable nappies, wipes and now black bin bag charges."

The GRNN was established in 2012 as a not-for-profit community group aiming to promote the benefits of 'real nappies'. Its efforts have resulted in more families 'going real' and an increase in applications for the States' incentive, which offers parents and carers a £35 voucher towards reusable nappies.

"The real nappies of today are leagues away from the folded cloth nappies of the past," said father of one, Dr Martin Smith, who supports the network. "I can't understand the stigma of using them - and yes, as a dad I both change and wash them, as well as look for cute new patterns to add to the collection!"

Father of two Phil Saunders added: "Cloth nappies don't smell as much as disposable nappies do!"

The network is hosting a 'nappychino' tomorrow for interested parents and carers to learn more about 'real nappies' whilst enjoying a slice of cake. It is being held at Bright Beginnings Children's Centre between 10:00 and 12:00. It is also running a Facebook competition to win a prize donated by Aladdins Cave, which stocks reusable nappies locally.

You can find more information on the network's Facebook page or contact the team at guernseyrealnappynetwork@gmail.com.

For instructions on how to apply for a voucher you can contact the Recycling Team on 202245 or email recycle@gov.gg.
