Gaming charity festival returns with tag-team tournament

Saturday 11 August 2018

Gaming will help boost local good causes today.

Guernsey Gaming Fest is returning with a tag-team tournament after its debut last year, when it raised £2,500 for charity.

The festival is part of Guernsey Gaming for Good, which has raised nearly £10,000 for charity over the last four years.

Beginning at midday and running for 12 hours, three tournaments will take place in a ‘doubles’ format, seeing teams of two competing in elimination-style games for the island title.

Wrestling party game GangBeasts is the opening game, followed by soccer and racing Rocket League at 16:00, before the 20:00 Halo 2 shooter.

Each tournament will operate an entry fee of an £8 charitable donation per team (£4 per player) and the format has been adjusted from 2017 to allow more game time per entry with additional rounds, and less waiting between matches thanks to two extra competition stations. Players are encouraged to bring their own doubles partner, but solo players are welcome and will be matched up with another player on the day to ensure accessibility for all.

“It is extremely exciting for us to be organising the Guernsey Gaming Festival for the second year running. It has been a challenging journey of learning and expansion over the last four years as we have built a community in the island and helped push the gaming scene to where it is today” said Tyler Bourgaize, Press Officer for GG4G.

“It’s hard to imagine that in 2014 we were running tournaments of 5-10 people at the Loading Bar, and now running island-level events in the centre of Town. It’s absolutely thrilling to welcome gamers of all ages into our competitions and celebrate this great opportunity we have for sportsmanship and to share our passion with the island.”

Money raised on the day will go toward the GSPCA, and Manager Steve Byrne said: “The GSPCA team are hugely grateful to GG4G for choosing to support the GSPCA with the funds raised from Guernsey Gaming Fest 2018, as we have so many animals in our care currently and exciting projects that we are appealing for support. This amazing event will be helping highlight a very special project which will be unveiled closer to the time.”
