Fly tippers 'will be pursued'

One of Guernsey's parishes is warning that fly tippers will be pursued after its constables raised their concerns with the team managing the island's waste strategy.

The Vale Parish website reports that Senior Constable Richard Leale shared concerns with Richard Evans, the Deputy Managing Director of States Trading Assets, after a couple of cases of 'unauthorised tipping' in the parish recently.

Concerns were initially raised before Guernsey's new waste strategy went live last year, as some people thought there would be an increase in fly tipping.

So far no data has been provided to ascertain if there has been any increase, but there have been more cases shared on social media through the recently-created Facebook group Guernsey fly tipping spotters.

Fly tipping is treated as a criminal offence, and efforts are made to indentify those who leave rubbish on public land so they can be prosecuted.

However, Mr Evans told the Vale Parish website that 'Guernsey Waste was currently reviewing how fly tipping is policed and reported, to make the process as simple as possible and easier for people to understand'.

Anyone who sees any fly tipped rubbish should call Guernsey Police initially on 725111 or Guernsey Waste on 231234.
