Flights and ferries booked up for Alderney Week

Alderney Week which starts today gives thousands the opportunity to experience the "strange and special" northern isle.

The build up to the family friendly carnival has seen tickets sell out on the ferry and flight services serving the island.

A small team have been working over time to prepare for the week-long festivities as part of the traditional Alderney Week. The theme this year is "Animal Magic" in which all attendees are urged to dress up as their favourite circus act.

An opening BBQ takes place today with events continuing until the following Sunday.

The schedule of events includes the popular cavalcade and boat races as well as newer events such as a fashion show and a Lady Gaga tribute show before the famous quarry party. 

One of the organisers of this year's festival, Bryony Harris (who also works at the island's cycle hire shop), said the year revolves around Alderney Week preparations.

"There are 4-5 ferries a day all filled up, the flights are booked up too and I can see a number of people have booked charter boats. The population well over doubles during the week, all the campsites are filled even people's spare rooms. People love it, they book it up two years in advance. 

"Alderney is quite a special and strange place it's very different to all the other islands, we do things differently so I think people like to be able to come and see that. During Alderney Week you can be watching an event with 1,000 people attending and still go down to the beach and be the only person there," she said.
