Firework reminder as end of year looms

Sunday 31 December 2023

The GSPCA is encouraging everyone to use fireworks responsibly on New Year’s Eve to protect people, pets and local wildlife.

The animal charity says there are numerous incidents each year involving animals and children which is why safety as respect should be considered before lighting a fuse.

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne said all firework events need to be notified to the States and therefore the public.

“It is very important to register your event with the States of Guernsey for their and our firework calendar so we can all ensure our pets and animals are safe,” he said.

“To notify the States of your event and see the current list please go to https://gov.gg/fireworks.”

“We’d advise dog walkers to avoid taking or letting their animals out during the times of these displays and to ensure windows and doors are closed with curtains shut and music playing or the tv on to help drown out the noise,” Mr Byrne said.

“We have plenty of advice online and have products at the GSPCA on sale that can help. Hopefully those having events will enjoy them and the animals in the area will be kept safe and well.”

Fireworks should never be set off near animals, he added.
