Fairtrade fortnight goes virtual this year

Tuesday 16 February 2021

Guernsey’s Fairtrade steering group has converted its Fairtrade Fortnight events to be accessible online.

Guernsey is celebrating it 15th year of being an accredited Fairtrade Island this year, and organisers were hoping to be one of the few places in the British Isles to host face-to-face events.

“Our Fairtrade Fortnight events are always very well supported by islanders and local businesses,” said Secretary of the Guernsey Steering group, Hannah Davis.

“When lockdown was announced in January we were disappointed, but we got our thinking caps on and hope that our new virtual formats will meet with the same level of enthusiasm.”

This year members of the public have been invited to an online quiz, a Big Fairtrade Lockdown Breakfast and a creative competition for children.

This year’s Fairtrade theme is Choose the World You Want, and will be highlighting the negative effects climate change has on farmers and food supply.

“Farmers and workers in agricultural communities in countries such as the Dominican Republic and Uganda have contributed the least to climate crisis,” said Ms Davis.

“Yet they are among the world’s most vulnerable and are already feeling the worst effects from unpredictable weather, to natural disasters and disease.”

Fairtrade Fortnight runs from Monday 22 February to Sunday 7 March and the following events are being run in Guernsey:

  • ‘Choose the World you Want’ creative competition for all school-age children, deadline Friday 26 February.

  • Throughout the whole Fortnight – Big Fairtrade Lockdown Breakfast. Treat yourself to a special breakfast at home with family or have a business breakfast online with work colleagues. Fairtrade hamper to be won.

  • Sat 27 Feb from 19:45 – Fairtrade Virtual Quiz (see Facebook page for joining instructions)

  • Sat 6 March at 10:00 – climate themed virtual story time with the Guille-Allès children’s library

You can find details on how to get involved on the Guernsey Fairtrade website or their Facebook page.
