Three swimmers have been given the chance to represent Guernsey at the Commonwealth Youth Games after the island was awarded an additional three competitor places.

The Commonwealth Youth Games are taking place in Trinidad and Tobago this summer, starting on 1 August - just over two weeks after the end of the Island Games in Guernsey.

Guernsey is sending swimming and cycling teams to Trinidad and Tobago with some of the athletes now set to compete at both events this summer.

The Commonwealth Youth Games are for athletes aged 18 years and under with some sports specifying different age groupsWorld Swimming recently amended its youth age-groups to include girls of 18 years, having previously had an upper limit of 17 years.  

The Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association asked if they could have any additional athlete places to support the swimming competition and local swimmers.

Three extra places have been given, with Oriana Wheeler, Jemima Green, and Hannah Jones given the chance to compete.

They all said they are "extremely proud to be given this amazing opportunity" which means they can enter the relays and individual events.

Team Guernsey now includes two cyclists under the care of Alex Wilson, and eight swimmers under the care of Sara Parfit.  Leading the Team are Karina Jackson and Peter Jory to complete the Team of fourteen.

They said they are "excited to support Guernsey’s young athletes at the prestigious and high level of competition this summer in Trinidad".

Utmost Island Games

Both the Commonwealth Youth Games and the Island Games were postponed from 2021, due to the Covid pandemic.

The Island Games are held every two years ordinarily with the '21 Games rescheduled for this summer, while the Commonwealth Youth Games are usually held every four years. They were also rescheduled for this summer and re-awarded to Trinidad and Tobago.
