“Every week is mental health week”

Tuesday 11 May 2021

The States has offered advice to people struggling with their mental health, as we enter Mental Health Awareness Week.

A Consultant Psychiatrist at Health and Social Care shared his experience working with and supporting people with mental health difficulties.

“All this week our colleagues and partners across the Bailiwick will be sharing resources and stories to raise awareness of mental health issues,” said Dr Dominic Bishop

“For those under the care of our HSC services, our level and length of contact with individuals is dependent on their specific needs,” said Dr Bishop. “This ranges from those seen frequently perhaps for many years, to those seen for a short-term, focussed piece of support work."

Dr Bishop said help is available in the island for people struggling with their mental health:

  • Talk to someone you trust

  • Contact your GP and explain you need an urgent appointment

  • Contact your key worker

  • Contact the Samaritans 24/7: 116 123

  • Call the emergency services if you are concerned you might hurt yourself or someone else

Express spoke to Gaz Papworth during our latest podcast, following the premiere of his latest documentary. UnMute focuses on the mental health impacts of different topical issues such as covid and the 'Black Lives Matters' movement.

“One thing I’ve learnt is that it’s ok to talk and help each other out. If someone is looking down or upset, please help them – if my film helps even one person then that’s great.

Mr Papworth is now working on a third film called Sterling’s War. You can listen to our full conversation with him HERE.
