“Every week is mental health week”

The States has offered advice to people struggling with their mental health, as we enter Mental Health Awareness Week.

A Consultant Psychiatrist at Health and Social Care shared his experience working with and supporting people with mental health difficulties.

“All this week our colleagues and partners across the Bailiwick will be sharing resources and stories to raise awareness of mental health issues,” said Dr Dominic Bishop

“For those under the care of our HSC services, our level and length of contact with individuals is dependent on their specific needs,” said Dr Bishop. “This ranges from those seen frequently perhaps for many years, to those seen for a short-term, focussed piece of support work."

Dr Bishop said help is available in the island for people struggling with their mental health:

• Talk to someone you trust

• Contact your GP and explain you need an urgent appointment

• Contact your key worker

• Contact the Samaritans 24/7: 116 123

• Call the emergency services if you are concerned you might hurt yourself or someone else
