The FCG EPIC week is back for 2018 and this year the organisers are aiming to get as many people of all ages and physical abilities to take part and get moving.
Following the EPIC Challenges carried out in 2017 the event aims to raise money for the Guernsey Cheshire Home and This is EPIC while inspiring people to take on physical challenges; becoming more active and pushing themselves to their personal limits.
The idea of the week-long event, which is sponsored by First Central Group (FCG), is for people to take on their own EPIC challenge, but things are a bit different to last year: this year the challenge can be any physical activity.
EPIC Week starts on Monday 2 July and has been organised by local endurance athletes Philip Smith and Warren Mauger. Mr Smith and Mr Mauger have also pledged to take part in as many activities as they possibly can and they are hoping to be given some fun tasks.
Mr Smith said: “This year is all about the community and encouraging more people, teams and groups to get involved in The FCG EPIC Week. We are opening the activities to include anything and everything to ensure we make the week as accessible as possible. Hopefully the week empowers people to get active and also help raise money for charity whilst they take on their own seven day challenge.”
EPIC Challenges have created a selection of activities that individuals or teams can take part in during the seven day event, but they’re inviting people to come up with their own challenge. From walking a mile a day, space-hopping across every beach in a week, Zumba-ing, dancing, cycling 100 miles or completing a marathon a day; "whatever activity inspires the community to get their move on."
Mr Mauger said: “What I love about this is it’s truly inclusive – the aim is for each individual to do their own epic challenge, for some this can be as simple as walking round a garden, starting out running/walking a mile or two a day, swimming in the sea etc.
"Last year I was so inspired by the many different stories of people and groups of people pushing themselves outside their comfort zone and most have kept it going ever since which is amazing. Each person without realising it will be inspiring their own family and friends. It’s a great chance to kick start a new healthier lifestyle. “
Last year’s EPIC Challenge raised £27,701 which was split between Guernsey Mind and This Is EPIC. Guernsey Mind used the funds raised to provide support services for adults with autism and Asperger’s. This is EPIC used funds to support projects which empower people to overcome poverty in a sustainable way in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This year funds raised will be split equally between This is EPIC and Guernsey Cheshire Home.
