Emergency works investigated by Guernsey Police

Wednesday 03 February 2021

Contractors carrying out "essential emergency work" at the Admiral Park construction site have been investigated by police, who told them to cease all work as soon as the site was made safe.

The contractor, Rihoy & Son, told Express that "essential emergency structural works" had to be undertaken to secure the partly-constructed steel frame of the new multi-storey car park.

Concerns were raised about construction works taking place during lockdown and Guernsey Police were contacted by members of the public.

"JESCC operators made contact with the contractor running the construction site at Admiral Park yesterday," said a spokesperson for Bailiwick Law Enforcement. "We were told some urgent work was being done to make the site safe before it was cleared."

"Officers then attended later in the evening and met the contractors to tell them the work must stop as soon as the site was safe, or they would be investigated for a Covid-19 restrictions breach.

"Those officers were told the site was now safe, and so work was being halted. Officers attended a second time this morning to ensure work had ceased. There was no one working on the site, and it had been cleared.”

In a statement, the firm said that "all permissions have been sought from The States of Guernsey." Further questions have been submitted this morning to clarify whether permission was granted.

The firm said that any staff on-site had been "adhering to social distancing and all other current public health requirements."

"Temporary support used during the normal course of construction isn't designed to be left in place for more than a few days, generally over weekends," said a spokesman.

"On structural engineer’s advice the steel erection must progress to a safe point within the sequence of works, additionally further temporary support has been designed and needs to be completed to ensure safety of the structure for the remainder of the lockdown."

We are told that the work has now been completed and that all work has ceased.
