E&I plug in new charging stations for electric vehicles

Tuesday 07 July 2020

Two new publicly available electric vehicle charging stations are now operational at the Odeon Car Park and La Crocq Pier.

Electric and hybrid vehicle registrations have risen substantially over the past five years, from 221 in 2015, to 931 in 2020.

The new charging stations can be operated by using the same app that is used at the North Beach spaces.

"The introduction of new charging stations is one of the key steps towards lower carbon transportation referenced within the States’ Energy Policy, which was approved by the States last week," said E&I President Barry Brehaut. "These locations are in high density areas, convenient for people who may not have their own charging stations at their home or, in the case of La Crocq Pier, close to amenity and business parking areas."

New guidelines have been set out those who do charge their vehicles from home while parking on-street.

The guidelines provide information on suitable products and advice to help avoid potential trip and visibility hazards. The guidelines have been produced with support from The States' Disability Officer, the Health and Safety Executive, and Plug–N-Go Limited, which is the States’ EV Contractor.

Deputy Brehaut said the aim was to put the infrastructure in place to support those wanting to switch to EVs.

"The expansion of publicly available E.V. charging network will be of benefit to people who already have or, importantly, are considering changing to an electric vehicle," he said. "As such, whilst other public locations that may be suitable are being considered, we would again welcome hearing from the public if they have any suggested locations."

The next phase of work will include installing charging stations at Salerie Car Park.

More information, including the guidelines for on-street charging, can be found at www.gov.gg/sustainabletransport.
