The east coast takes a battering

Friday 09 November 2018

Most of Guernsey's east coast was closed this evening as the stormy weather wreaked havoc leaving deep water at major traffic junctions.

In photos taken by Scott Tostevin, the strength of the weather is clear at Havelet, while further along the coast there were deep pools of sea water and rain along Les Banques at Admiral Park and the Red Lion roundabout.

The island's civil protection volunteers worked with Guernsey Police to close off large sections of the busy road, with queues from the Red Lion to Pitronnerie Road shortly after 19:00 as the situation worsened.

Parts of the road were closed for two hours around the high tide mark as the wind speeds picked up, pushing the waves crashing over the walls, hitting the buildings opposite.

Elsewhere trees came down, including on the Grandes Rocques Road, Saints Road in St Martins and outside La Houguette School.

The weather is expected to now improve overnight with strong winds again forecast on Saturday evening and into the following dawn.
