Duchess of Edinburgh returning to Guernsey

Wednesday 24 July 2024

Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Edinburgh, will return to Guernsey next month [12 August] two years after her last visit.

She was last in the island in 2022 when she was the Countess of Wessex. She became Duchess in 2023.

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, will be coming to the island to celebrate the Association of Sail Training Organisations Guernsey to Poole Small Ships Race.

The race will run from 13 - 15 August and involves 140 young people across 12 boats. The Duchess is a Royal Patron of the organisation and will be meeting with the young people taking part.

"This race was inspired by the RNLI's 200th Anniversary with the aim of raising awareness of the impact on, and value to, young people of Sail Training and adventure afloat generally," said Chief Executive of the Association, Kerry McMillan.

"We know that Guernsey provided crews for Sail Training passages like this one in the past, and we’re very much hoping to reignite that relationship with the Bailiwick and its young people."

The Lieutenant-Governor, Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell, added: "We are exceptionally fortunate to be hosting this short visit by Her Royal Highness in her capacity as Patron of an organisation that is particularly relevant to these islands. The sea is a wonderful environment for developing leadership and resilience in young people, and Guernsey provides the perfect setting for this event. We hope that Her Royal Highness has a very enjoyable day here, both afloat and ashore.

"The character and skills that young people acquire through sail training not only benefit them as individuals, but also the whole community. Qualities like resilience, initiative and self-confidence are always in demand, not only in the workplace but also in other aspects of daily life."
