Dr Brink thanks public for wearing masks as cases fall over the weekend

The number of known active cases of covid-19 in the Bailiwick fell to 871 after the weekend. There were 245 new cases found, but 286 people recovered.

Speaking after the release of the latest case numbers, the Director of Public Health, Dr Nicola Brink, cautioned against complacency. She said it was too soon to know whether the number of cases in the third wave had peaked.

But she thanked people for following States' directions and advice and wearing face coverings to help make it harder for the virus to spread. 

“It is too soon to comment on whether the latest daily case figures are indications of a change in trends,” said Dr Brink.

“The number of positive cases can vary on individual days for various reasons, such as the timing of test results through the laboratory. 

"But we thank islanders for the steps they are taking to mitigate transmissions, including the use of face coverings, regular lateral flow testing and staying at home if they have any symptoms.”

Pictured: On Tuesday and Wednesday, anyone with a positive lateral flow test can make a booking for a PCR test at the St. Peter Port Harbour Terminal. This is down to the forecast for stormy weather on those days. 

Dr Brink said that Guernsey must remain vigilant while medical authorities around the world continue to gather data on the spread and risk of the omicron variant of covid-19 which was discovered recently in Southern Africa and is now present in dozens of countries, including the UK.

“Importantly, if you do have symptoms, please report them so we can arrange a PCR test, even if you have had a negative lateral flow result,” said Dr Brink.

“This is particularly important as we continue to respond to the uncertainty presented by the omicron variant which has not yet been detected in the Bailiwick but continues to be found in more countries worldwide.”

The latest figures released by the States - pictured below - show that the total number of cases of covid-19 found in the Bailiwick since the pandemic began is now more than 4,633.
