The 'do's and don'ts' of lockdown recycling

Thursday 30 April 2020

Clothes, bubble wrap and batteries are among the items which still can't be recycled in Guernsey, despite the Household Waste and Recycling Centre reopening today.

It's been given some new temporary rules to work under while we're in phase two of the covid-19 lockdown.

The layout has been reconfigured so anyone going there can stick to social distancing guidelines.

Social distancing also limits some of the materials which can be dropped off as staff can't help to move anything. They also can't take any payments, meaning items which can only be recycled at a cost, including wooden furniture, beds, and mattresses, will not be accepted until these can be safely managed.

The kerbside blue and clear recycling bags, bulky cardboard, glass and foodwaste can be taken to Longue Hougue under the temporary rules, but black bags can't be.

As staff can't help move heavy items, domestic appliances should only be taken to the waste site if they can be moved by those delivering them, which may mean two people from the same household travelling there.

Guernsey Waste, Operations Manager, Sarah Robinson says:

“We have had to reorganise the site to ensure social distancing measures can be adhered to and this has required us to limit the types of items accepted. Items that are bulkier and more difficult to store such as scrap metals and rigid plastics have been prioritised over those smaller in nature and therefore easier to keep hold of for a bit longer.

“We are also unable to accept items that require payment at this stage, although that should assist with turnaround times. We will keep operations under review and will allow the acceptance of further materials when it is safe to do so.”

The green waste sites reopened earlier this week - with people using the normal one at Chouet experiencing very long queues. There is also a temporary green waste site at Longue Hougue which was less busy on its first day.

Staff are expecting Longue Hougue to be busy when the waste site reopens so they will be directing traffic so only a limited number of customers can enter the site at any time. Anyone who doesn't need to go to deliver goods urgently is asked to keep hold of the for a bit longer while things settle down again.

To try and cope with the expected increase in demand, the opening hours have been extended to include Thursdays, when it is usually closed.

From today, the waste site at Longue Hougue will be open between 08:00 and 16:00, Mondays to Saturdays and between 08:00 and 12:00 on Sundays. It will still be closed on Bank Holidays, including next Friday and Saturday, for VE Day and Liberation Day.

There will also be a traffic management system in place, with traffic being turned away if the queue goes past the Aquastar building.

Bring bank sites remain closed at this stage and everyone is encouraged to use the kerbside recycling scheme instead.

There is also no limit to the number of rubbish bags households can put out, so long as they each have a bin sticker on.
